Channing Tatum is set to take over the role of Gambit as the popular X-Men character is set to get his own solo film for the first time. While we have seen this character in the X-Men films before - Taylor Kitsch played him briefly in X-Men Origins: Wolverine - this is going to be the first real introduction to Remy LeBeau.

The movie sees Carolin reunite with Tatum - he has penned the script for Magic Mike XXL but is on board Gambit as producer - and admits that Gambit is still in the 'script stage' of development.

Speaking to Collider, Carolin said: "This is a standalone movie and it's the story of Gambit and we'll probably gradually integrate that character into the X-Men universe as we go.

"As far as what characters from the X-Men universe make it into the movie - we're not exactly sure yet, so we're figuring it out. It's still at the script stage... It's his story in New Orleans."

Last month it was announced that Rupert Wyatt will be returning to the director's chair for the first time since The Gambler to helm the highly anticipated film. However, Wyatt is no stranger to the big budget blockbuster having steered Rise of the Planet of the Apes to both critical and commercial success back in 2011.

Tatum is currently the only official cast member and has been linked to the role of Gambit for some time as the X-Men universe is expanded even further. Gambit has been given a U.S. release date of 7th October 2016 - however, no UK release date has yet been announced.

Carolin was on the red carpet in London earlier this week as he helped promote new film Magic Mike XXL, on which he serves as producer as well as writer. Carolin is another name returning to the franchise having penned the screenplay for the first film.
