Johnson takes over the director's chair from J.J. Abrams for the eighth instalment of the Star Wars franchise, which is due to hit the big screen next year.

The filmmaker wrapped up principle photography on Star Wars: Episode VIII earlier this summer and now he has taken to Instagram to show fans that the process of putting the first cut of the film together has begun.

The editing process is a long one and Johnson had this simple message to go with the picture, 'Day one!'

Day one!

Star Wars: Episode VIII is only the fourth feature film of Johnson's career and follows on from the success of Brick, The Brothers Bloom, and Looper. This is the biggest film of his career to date and I cannot wait to see him put his stamp on this franchise.

The movie sees Daisy Ridley and John Boyega reprise their roles of Rey and Finn while Gwendoline Christie, Mark Hamill, Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, and Lupita Nyong'o are some of the familiar names returning to the cast list.

Episode VIII will hit the big screen two years after the critical and commercial success of The Force Awakens, which went on to gross over $1 billion at the global box office.

However, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is a film that all fans of the series can look forward to this December and is the first Star Wars spin-off.

Directing by Gareth Edwards and starring Oscar-nominated actress Felicity Jones, Rogue One is set after events of A New Hope.

Star Wars: Episode VIII is released 15th December 2017.
