Rio 2

Rio 2

Rio 2 has seen of the challenge from both Noah and Divergent to reign at the top of the UK box office.

Both Noah and Divergent have both topped the U.S. box office in recent weeks, but they were no match for the animation sequel in the UK this weekend.

Rio 2, which comes three years after the release of the first film, just managed to edge out Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as it took £2.8 million.

The Winter Soldier - which has stormed to the top of the U.S. box office over the weekend, breaking all April records - slipped just a single place, as it took a further £2.7 million.

It has been confirmed this week that Captain America 3 will indeed go up against Batman vs. Superman, when both movies are released in May 2016.

Noah may have received some criticism from religious sectors in recent weeks, but that has not stopped it from performing well at the box office. The Darren Aronofsky film opened with a haul of over £2.5 million, to take third spot.

Divergent is the big new young adult fiction adaptation, but performed disappointingly in its opening weekend. The film took just £1.7 million to open in fourth.

Muppets Most Wanted was down three places this week at five. The Grand Budapest Hotel was another three-place faller: dropping from three to number six.

La Boheme and The Double were the two final new entries inside the top ten this week, as they opened at seven and eight. While The Lego Movie was down three at nine.

Non-Stop was this week’s biggest faller, as it dropped six places to round off the top ten at number ten.
