Robert Redford

Robert Redford says he wanted to experience a 'new form of filmmaking' and that was one of the major reasons why he signed on for Captain America: The Winter Solider.

Redford is one of the big new additions to the Captain America sequel as he takes on the role of Alexander Pierce, a major figure in S.H.I.E.L.D.

And he admits that the technology driven movies was something that he really wanted to try out.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the actor said: "One of the reasons that I did it was I wanted to experience this new form of filmmaking that's taken over where you have kind of cartoon characters brought to life through high technology.

"The Avengers series is a product of high technology playing a major role in the new order of filmmaking so I wanted to experience that - I just wanted to know what that was like and I had that opportunity, so for me it was like stepping into new terrain just to experience what it was like."

Captain America: The Winter Solider will see Redford star alongside Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson - they will be reprising the roles of Captain America, Black Widow and Nick Fury.

The movie will see Anthony and Joe Russo take over the director's chair, as Redford teams up with them for the first time.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is released 28th March.
