Byrne is best known for her roles in X-Men: First Class, Bridesmaids, and Bad Neighbours in recent years, but admits that she has been frustrated by the roles that have been offered to her.

The actress says that she wanted to tackle more than just 'mother or girlfriend' roles and now she is finally getting her wish.

Speaking to HELLO! Magazine, the actress said: "I want to keep working as much as I can and take advantage of the opportunities that have opened up to me.

"I've spent a lot of time dealing with the reality that good roles are often very hard to find for women - sometimes I've found it frustrating to be offered the wife or the mother or girlfriend rather than the character that drives the story forward.

"I'm glad to be finally getting to do those roles. It's worth the wait if you get to do something you love."

We last saw Byrne on the big screen December with musical Annie, but she is set to return with new action/comedy Spy, which is set to hit the big screen in June.

Spy will see her reunite with Bridesmaids director Paul Feig and co-star Melissa McCarthy, while Jude Law and Jason Statham are just some of the other names that are on board. Spy is promising to be one of the must see comedy movies of the summer.

Byrne has also been linked with reprising the role of Moira MacTaggert in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, which is due to start filming this year. If she does return to this role, it will be the first time we have seen her in an X-Men film since First Class back in 2011.

The actress is also set to start work on The Meddler, another comedy with director and writer Lorene Scafaria. J.K. Simmons and Susan Sarandon are also on board the project,

Spy is released 5th June.
