Since hitting the big screen back in December, The Force Awakens has been breaking record after record and has now grossed $2, 008 billion.

While Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the third film to gross $2 billion - joining Avatar and Titanic - it becomes only the second film to do it on initial release; Titanic reached this milestone after a 3D re-release.

Avatar still leads the way with $2,788 billion at the global box office but Titanic's total of $2,186 could be under threat from the J.J. Abrams-directed film.

So far, the movie has grossed $905.9 million in the U.S. and $1.102 billion overseas making it, for now, the third highest grossing movie of all time. It goes without saying that The Force Awakens is the most successful film in the Star Wars franchise.

This was the first time that Abrams had directed a Star Wars film and it was the first film in this much-loved series in a decade.

The movie introduced us to new characters as Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Andy Serkis, Oscar Isaac, and Lupita Nyong'o were some of the new faces on the cast list.

Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Peter Mayhew have also reprised their roles as Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Leia, and Chewbacca.

The Force Awakens kicks off a new trilogy of movies with Episode VIII set to hit the big screen in December 2017.

However, it is Rian Johnson who will be in the director's chair this time around - the Looper filmmaker has also penned the film's screenplay.
