Father of the Bride fans are going to be disappointed as Steve Martin has denied he is staring in a third film.

Martin took on the role of George Banks in the 1991 film, and the sequel four years later.

Talk of a third film have been circulating this week, but the actor has quashed rumours of his involvement.

He wrote on Twitter: "So excited to read I'm doing Father of the Bride 3 since I haven't seen a script or been offered the role!"

Recent reports stated that the third film would be centred around the couple's son Matty, who was originally played by Kieran Culkin, when he reveals he's planning to get married to the son of a US Navy Seal, leaving Martin's character "thunderstruck and speechless".

However, despite claiming that he hasn't been contacted about the possibility of reprising his role, Martin has not disputed the fact that a third 'Father of the Bride' movie could be being made.

The films' original director and co-writer Charles Shyer was also said to have signed up to develop the sequel.

Martin's 'Father of the Bride' was based on the 1950 movie of the same name while 'Father of the Bride II' was loosely based on 1951 flick 'Father's Little Dividend'.

The Big Year was the last time that we saw Martin on the big screen back in 2011. He has completed work on new animation film Home, and will voice the character of Captain Smek
