Steven Spielberg has been linked to a big screen adaptation of The BFG.

The popular Roald Dahl novel has given an animation makeover back in 1989, but will make a movie return with Spielberg at the helm.

A statement from the Oscar winning filmmaker read: "The BFG' has enchanted families and their children for more than three decades.

"We are honoured that the Roald Dahl estate has entrusted us with this classic story."

The BFG will see screenwriter Melissa Mathison reunite with Spielberg - they last worked together on E.T. - as she will pen the script for the movie.

Frank Marshall will produce, and Michael Siegel and John Madden will executive producers, reports Variety.com.

Lincoln was the last time that we saw Spielberg in the director's chair, as he will concentrate on producing work this year.

He has served as executive producer on Transformers: Age of Extinction and Jurassic World: which is currently being filmed.

Spielberg will begin production on The BFG in 2015, with a planned 2016 release.
