The superhero movie is one of the genre giants on the big screen at the moment with the likes of Avengers Assemble, Iron Man 3 and Avengers: Age of Ultron all grossing over $1 billion at the box office. And there are plenty more on the way as we head into 2016.

Spielberg, who is set to return to the director's chair with Cold War drama Bridge of Spies, had previously said that he thought there were too many blockbusters being made.

When asked by the PA did he still feel this way, the director said: "I still feel that way. We were around when the Western died and there will be a time when the superhero movie goes the way of the Western.

"It doesn't mean there won't be another occasion where the Western comes back and the superhero movie someday returns. Of course, right now the superhero movie is alive and thriving. I'm only saying that these cycles have a finite time in popular culture.

"There will come a day when the mythological stories are supplanted by some other genre that possibly some young filmmaker is just thinking about discovering for all of us."

Bridge of Spies will see Spielberg reunite with double Oscar winner Tom Hanks to tell the true story of lawyer James Donovan, who is recruited by the CIA during the Cold War.

Bridge of Spies is the first film for Spielberg since Lincoln and he is also set to work on a new adaptation of The BFG.

As for the superhero film, 2016 is going to be a very busy year for this genre with Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange being released by Marvel. We are also going to see Deadpool, Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad and X-Men: Apocalypse hit the big screen.
