For decades, Stephen King’s novel series The Dark Tower has entertained readers, with the story now being adapted for the big screen and set for release a little later this year. With Idris Elba taking on the leading role as the Gunslinger, Roland Deschain, and Matthew McConaughey playing the mysterious and villainous Walter O’Dim, aka the Man in Black, the flick looks set to be one of the most exciting of the year so far. Released at this year’s BET Awards, an extended first look at the film can now be seen below:

Fans of the novels will know the titular tower is the one thing holding the universe together, but with the Man in Black determined to topple it and destroy the worlds once and for all, the Gunslinger is going to have to take on his biggest challenge to-date, as the forces of good and evil collide in a story like no other.

Despite being inspired by King’s novels, this story is one mostly separate from that which has been told on his book pages. Instead director Nikolaj Arcel will take elements from the books, but is clear that the movie will serve as a sequel to the tale already told by King.

He’s not the only man who’s been determined on bringing a Dark Tower film to fans, with JJ Abrams and Ron Howard both picking up the rights at various points, but failing to get anything off the ground.

Now with a screenplay written by Arcel alongside Akiva Goldsman, Jeff Pinkner and Anders Thomas Jensen, The Dark Tower will hit cinemas across the UK on August 18.
