The Martian, which marks the return of Ridley Scott to the director's chair and Matt Damon to the big screen, took a further £3.8 million as it continues wow audiences. This is just one of the movies that is tipped to be in the Oscar race.

Sicario was the highest entry inside the top ten this week as the crime/thriller opened at number two. The movie sees director Denis Villeneuve return to the crime genre, while Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benicio del Toro star.

The movie has been winning over critics since it screened at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and is another film that is expected to be in the mix when the Oscar nominations are announced at the beginning of next year.

The Walk was the second new entry and number three and is a movie that chronicles Philippe Petit's daring challenge to walk on a high-wire between the World Trade Centre Towers. Joseph Gordon-Levitt takes on the role of Petit as he teams up with filmmaker Robert Zemeckis for the first time.

Legend fell two places from two to number four this week, while The Intern slipped just one to round off the top five. Everest fell out of the top five for the first time as the disaster movie slipped from three to number six - it was also this week's biggest faller.

Michael Fassbender has been receiving critical acclaim for his performance as Macbeth, but the new take on the Shakespeare play fell from five to number seven. The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials was another two place faller as the film finished the weekend at number eight.

Regression, which stars Ethan Hawke and Emma Watson, was the third and final new entry inside the top ten, and the film opened at number nine. There was no move for animation film Inside Out as it rounded off the top ten.
