StudioCanal have this week released a compelling and exciting new trailer, as well as a set of new posters for their upcoming movie The Mercy, starring A-listers Rachel Weisz and Colin Firth. You can check out the trailer as well as the new posters for the film below:

James Marsh directs the flick following his Oscar-winning project The Theory of Everything, bringing another true story to the big screen and this time, making Donald Crowhurst (Firth) his subject.

An amateur sailor, Crowhurst is somebody who competed in the 1968 Sunday Times Golden Globe Race, hoping to make history and become the first person to circumnavigate the globe without making any stops. It’s a mighty challenge and one that comes with huge stakes, as he has his business and house on the line. Working from an unfinished boat, the task he’s set himself only grows in stature.

Leaving his wife Clare (Weisz) behind along with their children, Crowhurst is hesitant in his adventure, but takes his boat, the Teignmouth Electron for a journey that would change the lives of all who knew him.

Starring alongside Firth and Weisz are David Thewlis, Mark Gatiss, Andrew Buchan, Finn Elliot, Jonathan Bailey, Anna Madeley, Genevieve Gaunt and Ken Stott, with Blueprint Pictures producing the film and Scott Z. Burns having written the screenplay.

For those who want to know a little more about Crowhurst’s history, we’ll go into detail below, but be warned there will be spoilers for the movies included!

Crowhurst was a man who wanted to compete in the Golden Globe Race in the hope of taking home a cash prize from The Sunday Times. It was money he needed to help prop up his failing business, and the quickest way he thought he could have made the fortune.

Unfortunately for Crowhurst and his family, he encountered quick difficulty and abandoned the race in the early stages, reporting false positions and claiming he had completed a circumnavigation without actually travelling the world.

Taken by the ocean, Crowhurst would disappear and die on his journey, with evidence suggesting that he had possibly gone insane and tried to take his own life.

The Mercy comes to cinemas across the UK on February 9, 2018.
