The Revenant was released on Friday and marked the return of Leonardo DiCaprio to the big screen for the first time since he enjoyed critical acclaim with The Wolf of Wall Street.

The movie, which sees Alejandro González Iñárritu back in the director's chair, took £5.2 million over the weekend to storm to the top spot here in the UK. This box office success comes a week after The Revenant picked up twelve Oscar nominations; including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director.

Creed was the second new entry inside the top five as the boxing film opened at number three. This is the latest chapter in the Rocky story and sees Sylvester Stallone team up with Michael B Jordan and Ryan Coogler is back in the director's chair.

Daddy's Home was down one at this week's number three and The Hateful Eight was a three place faller as the Quentin Tarantino rounded off the top five.

The Danish Girl fell out of the top five as the film slipped two places from four to this week's number six. Room was another new entry this week as the already critically acclaimed film opened at number seven.
