Hugh Jackman has hinted that the third Wolverine movie will be the last time that we see him take on this iconic character.

Wolverine was the role that really catapulted Jackman to global fame when it played him for the first time in X-Men back in 2000 - he has since appeared in ever X-Men movie that has hit the big screen.

He is set to lead the cast in a third solo film - which is expected to shoot early next year - and could well be the last time that we see the actor put on the famous Wolverine claws.

Taking to Instagram, the actor posted an image of the claws along with this message: "WOLVERINE...ONE LAST TIME. HJ."

The third Wolverine film, which is yet to be titled, comes after the box office success of The Wolverine back in 2013 and sees James Mangold back in the director's chair and David James Kelly is also on board to pen the screenplay.

While Jackman is the only official member of the cast currently on board, Patrick Stewart is the first name to be linked to the film and could be back to reprise the role of Professor Charles Xavier - I guess we will have to see if that rumour turns out to be true.

X-Men hit the big screen back in 2000, before Jackman went on to star in X2 and The Last Stand before making a first appearance in a solo film X-Men Origins: Wolverine. He did provide a great cameo moment in X-Men: First Class before teaming up with James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender for last years' X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Days of Future Past was both a critical and commercial smash and Jackman has been linked with a role in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse. The movie sees Bryan Singer back in the director's chair and will be released next year. However, it has not been confirmed that Jackman is on the cast list for the film.

2015 is going to be a busy year for the actor - we have already seen him in sci-fi film Chappie - and he is set to return this summer in Pan, where he will take on another villainous role with Blackbeard.

He is currently filming Eddie the Eagle alongside Taron Egerton - who is playing Eddie Edwards - and director Dexter Fletcher. The Greatest Showman on Earth is another project that is on the horizon for the actor later this year.

The third Wolverine film is set to hit the big screen in the UK in March 2017.
