Tom Cruise says he is glad that he finally got to work with Morgan Freeman - over twenty years after they met for the first time.

Cruise and Freeman are back on the big screen this week as they star together in sci-fi epic Oblivion.

And Cruise reveals that it was back in 1990, when they were both Oscar nominated, that Freeman suggested that they should work together.

Speaking to Flicks and Bits the actor said: "I met Morgan Freeman in 1990 when both of us were nominated for Oscars. I was nominated for ‘Born on the Fourth of July’ and he was for ‘Driving Miss Daisy.’

"I so admired him, and I remember that night at the Oscars how I was looking forward to saying hello and telling him how much I loved him in the movie and we both said we should work together sometime.

"I’m sad it took so many years before this occurred (laughs), but I’m happy to have had the opportunity to work with him. He’s a wonderful man, and he’s an extraordinary actor. We had a great cast on this film."

Oblivion kicks off the blockbuster summer and is Cruise's first big screen outing since action film Jack Reacher in the New Year.

The film sees him team up with director Joseph Kosinski for the first time as he adapts his own graphic novel for the big screen.

As for Cruise he will be back later this year with All You Need Is Kill and he has been linked with Van Helsing and The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Oblivion is out now.
