Tom Hanks is back for the next Dan Brown movie 'Inferno'.

The 57-year-old actor was expected to return as Harvard University symbologist Robert Langdon for the adaptation of 'The Lost Symbol', the third novel in the thriller series best known for 'The Da Vinci Code', but will instead star in the adaptation of Brown's fourth international bestseller, 'Inferno'.

Deadline.com are also reporting director Ron Howard, who worked on the adaptation of the second novel, 'Angels & Demons', backed out of directing the third chapter and has instead jumped straight to the fourth book, 'Inferno'.

After adapting the last film, David Koepp is set to write the screenplay for the forthcoming release.

Danny Strong appeared to be penning the adaptation for 'The Lost Symbol' in March 2012, which was to be directed by Mark Romanek after Ron Howard opted out, but little had been heard about the project since.

The 'Da Vinci Code' grossed $758million worldwide in 2006 and 'Angels & Demons' took in $486million worldwide in 2009, so there are high expectations for 'Inferno', which is set to be released on December 18, 2015.
