Farmiga returns to the role of Lorraine - who she played for the first time three years ago in The Conjuring.

The new film is set six years after the events of the first and the actress says that things have started to take their toll on her character.

Speaking to Collider about the film, Farmiga said: "It's six years later, and it's been six more years of skepticism and weariness. Lorraine is quite haggard and tired. It's post-Amityville, and it's taken a toll on her. Lorraine is experiencing a certain amount of unwillingness to investigate. I think she's just tired.

"Lorraine Warren is very black and white. She knows she has the power. For her, her faith is everything. It is just the toll it takes on her psyche, her mind, her body, and her emotions. It's very emotional. She also feels the potential doom because of the vision she saw in Amityville, regarding Ed. The thought of losing him is what terrifies her the most."

The Conjuring 2 sees Farmiga reunite with Patrick Wilson - who plays husband Ed Warren - and filmmaker James Wan. This is the first film for Wan since the success of Fast & Furious 7 and his first horror film since Insidious 2 in 2013.

The Conjuring 2 brings Lorraine and Ed Warren to England to investigate the Enfield Haunting. Madison Wolfe will take on the role of Janet Hodgson and is joined on the cast list by Frances O'Connor, Lauren Esposito, Maria Doyle Kennedy, and Franka Potente.

2016 has already been a busy year for Farmiga, who reprised the role of Norma Bates in television series Bates Motel.

She has also completed work on movie Burn Your Maps - which sees her team up with Room star Jacob Tremblay - and Boundaries - which is written and directed by Shana Feste.

The Conjuring 2 is released 13th June.
