Mr Holmes is one of the summer movies that I am looking forward to the most - not only will it be a welcome break from all of the big budget blockbusters, but it will also mark the return of Ian McKellen to the big screen.

Mr Holmes

Mr Holmes

Mr Holmes is set to be a very different Sherlock Holmes project as it will follow the detective after he has retired and it looking back on his life.

For me, McKellen is the perfect choice to look at the later years of this iconic literary hero and I cannot wait to see him put his own stamp on a character that we have come to know so very well.

And McKellen takes centre stage in this brand new international trailer for the film:

Mr Holmes will be the first time that we have seen McKellen on the big screen since the huge success of X-Men: Days of Future Past last summer - it is a film that reunites him with director Bill Condon.

The pair have already worked together on Gods and Monsters in 1998 and this will be their second feature film project together. It is also the first time that we have seen Condon in the director's chair since the release of The Fifth Estate in 2013.

Mr Holmes is the latest movie from BBC Film, and organisation that is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. BBC Films has been behind some of the greatest British movies such as Billy Elliot, Made in Dagenham, Notes On A Scandal, and Iris and Mr Holmes looks set to be another great addition to their legacy of wonderful movies.

Ian McKellen is one of the greatest British actors to ever grace the big screen and the stage and it is always exciting when he has a movie project on the horizon.

Hard to believe, but McKellen has never won an Oscar and has only received two nominations; Best Supporting Actor for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and Best Actor for Gods and Monsters. Could Mr Holmes finally be the role that snags him the biggest prize in film?

I know that it is perhaps a little early to be talking about possible Oscar contenders for 2016... however, he really could be one of the names in the mix.

Mr Holmes is released 19th June.
