Mr Turner

Mr Turner

Mr Turner is a film that has already been whipping up a storm on the festival circuit and I can't wait to see Timothy Spall in the central role.

Spall is set to play painter J.M.W. Turner in the film as he teams up with director Mike Leigh.

Mr Turner is a film that was met with acclaim when it was screened at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year - Spall went on to collect the Best Actor gong.

Spall may be an actor who has already had a very successful career, but this looks set to be the biggest and most distinguished role of his career to date.

Mike Leigh is back in the director's chair for his first film since Another Year, and he has also penned the screenplay for the film.

Leigh is famed for making character driven film, and Mr Turner looks set to follow in that fine tradition.

There are plenty of biopic films heading our way between now and the end of the year, but Mr Turner is set to be one that you cannot miss.

A great cast has been assembled for the film, as Spall is joined by Lesley Manville, Marion Bailey, Dorothy Atkinson, and Paul Jesson.

Mr. Turner explores the last quarter century of the great if eccentric British painter J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851).

Profoundly affected by the death of his father, loved by a housekeeper he takes for granted and occasionally exploits sexually, he forms a close relationship with a seaside landlady with whom he eventually lives incognito in Chelsea, where he dies.

Throughout this, he travels, paints, stays with the country aristocracy, visits brothels, is a popular if anarchic member of the Royal Academy of Arts, has himself strapped to the mast of a ship so that he can paint a snowstorm, and is both celebrated and reviled by the public and by royalty.

Mr Turner has already enjoyed awards success this year, and it is already being tipped as an Oscar contender. Are we going to see Spall in the Best Actor mix at the beginning of next year?

Mr Turner is released 31st October.
