We have already been treated to some great documentary movies so far this year, and Iris is another one that has been whipping up a storm.

Iris

Iris

Iris is a documentary about fashion icon Iris Apfel and sees Albert Maysles back in the director's chair for his first big screen documentary since Sally Gross: The Pleasure of Stillness back in 2007.

Maysles is no stranger to the documentary genre with the likes of The Gates, The Beales of Grey Gardens, and Letting Go: A Hospice Journey under his belt during his career - I really am very excited to see him back and working his magic once again.

Iris Alpfel is a fascinating character and here is the brand new trailer to whet your appetite ahead of the film's release:

However, the release of Iris is tinged with a little sadness as this will be the final film by Maysles - he is a director who has given an awful lot to the documentary film genre and it is set to see him finally leave it all behind.

Iris pairs legendary documentarian the late Albert Maysles with Iris Apfel, the quick-witted, flamboyantly dressed 93-year-old style maven who has had an outsized presence on the New York fashion scene for decades. More than a fashion film, the documentary is a story about creativity and how, even in Iris' dotage, a soaring free spirit continues to inspire.

Iris portrays a singular woman whose enthusiasm for fashion, art and people are life's sustenance and reminds us that dressing, and indeed life, is nothing but an experiment. Despite the abundance of glamour in her current life, she continues to embrace the values and work ethic established during a middle-class Queens upbringing during the Great Depression. "I feel lucky to be working. If you're lucky enough to do something you love, everything else follows."

Iris is one of the 2015 documentaries that I have really been looking forward to and it promises not to disappoint - I cannot wait to delve into the life of this captivating woman.

Iris is released 31st July.
