Oblivion

Oblivion

Starring: Tom Cruise, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Morgan Freeman

Director: Joseph Kosinski

Rating: 3.5/5

Joseph Kosinski made his directorial debut with Tron: Legacy and now he is back creating a new world with Oblivion.

The movie is a big screen adaptation of his own graphic novel of the same name that sees him once again deliver another very visual movie.

Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jacks mission is nearly complete.

Living in and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft.

Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

Oblivion is a very visual movie and Kosinski has created a world that is not only breathtakingly beautiful but feels incredibly real.

There are some wonderful visual treats from a desert of broken ships to some of America's most famous landmarks reduced to rubble.

Once again Kosinski really has hit the mark visually as the aesthetics of the movie are just beautiful.

Away from how the movie looks there is plenty to enjoy as Oblivion is an action packed movie from start to finish.

There is a great central mystery to this movie that will keep you hooked as you, along with the central character of Jack, has to unravel what has happened and - more importantly - just who is telling the truth.

This is a strong performance from Cruise, he really does excel in these action roles, as a man who finds his world and everything that he believes turned on it's head.

The main problem with the film is the same care and development that was put into the visuals was not put into the characters - which is a major shame.

Olga Kurylenko and Andrea Riseborough's characters suffer hugely from this - the two women in Jack's life - and yet their connection is never fully explored.

And because this connection is never fully explored the emotional punch to this movie is missing.

Oblivion is an action packed movie that really is one of the best sci-fi films that we have seen so far this year.

Kosinski has once again delivered on the look of the movie and he has used music in the film so well - the soundtrack really is excellent.

Oblivion does fall a little short of being a truly great film in this genre but it is one to be enjoyed none the less.
