Tom Cruise in Oblivion

Tom Cruise in Oblivion

Tom Cruise is one of Hollywood's most famous faces as well being a bankable star throughout the nineties and early noughties.

But in recent years Cruise has not had the box office success we would associate with this actor... but all that could be about to change with Oblivion.

So could this science fiction movie help Cruise restore his box office bite? And is Tom Cruise still a box office draw?

Cruise has being in some huge films throughout his careers and has created many memorable characters - Jerry Maguire, Rain Man, Mission: Impossible and Top Gun are just a few that spring to mind.

To be quite honest the problem that Cruise has faced over the last five years is he has starred in movies that just haven't been that good - movies that even he couldn't save.

Since 2009 Cruise has made five big screen outings and only one of those movies has grossed over $500 million worldwide; that was Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.

Valkyrie was released at the beginning of 2009 and saw Cruise team up with Bryan Singer in a movie that told the true story about an attempted assassination of Hitler.

This is a biopic movie and they are well known for not being huge box office draws as it took $200 million worldwide.

He returned to action in 2010 as he teamed up with Cameron Diaz for Day and Knight - a movie that struggled with audiences and critics.

It took just $261.1 million at the global box office and had a rather disastrous opening day in the U.S.

It grossed just $3.8 million at the end of the first day - Cruise's lowest opening day gross since Far and Away in 1992.

Another poor outing came last year when he starred in Rock of Ages, a role that saw him show off his vocal skills as he played rocker Stacee Jaxx.

But even Cruise's presence in the movie was not enough to save it as it grossed just $56.3 million - failing to recoup it's $75 million budget.

The only hit that Cruise has really enjoyed in recent years has come in the form of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.

Ghost Protocol was the fourth instalment of the Mission: Impossible franchise and saw Cruise reprise the role of Ethan Hunt.

Mission: Impossible is a well established franchise and is a fan favourite and so it did enjoy box office success as it took $694.7 million worldwide.

It is the most successful film in the Mission: Impossible franchise and re-established Cruise as an action hero.

He was back kicking some ass as Jack Reacher at the end of last year as Lee Child's novel was adapted for the big screen.

$216.5 million world wide is a reasonably respectful success Jack Reacher remains one of Cruise's lowest grossing movies of the last ten years.

But Cruise is looking to put all that right this week with the release of Oblivion - a film that kicks off the blockbuster summer.

The film sees him return to the science-fiction genre as the director Joseph Kosinski adapts his own graphic novel.

Oblivion is the first sci-fi project for Cruise since War of the World back in 2005.

And it is a genre that has performed well for Cruise in the past with War of the World and Minority Report doing ok at the box office - the latter was critically acclaimed when it was released back in 2002.

And Cruise has some big projects on the horizon with Van Helsing as well as being linked to The Man From U.N.C.L.E. so perhaps things are looking a little brighter for the Oscar nominated actor.

Oblivion is out now.
