Iron Man 3

Iron Man 3

Robert Downey Jr has provided us with many great movie moments over the years as he has delivered great performances and brought memorable characters to life.

Iron Man 3 is set to be released on DVD & Blu-Ray tomorrow, and to celebrate we take a look at the top ten Robert Downey Jr moment.

- Tropic Thunder

Believe it or not but this is Boris Johnson’s favourite film according to a Twitter Q and A he did last week.

There’s no doubting this is a cracking comedy but Downey Jr steals the show as Kirk Lazarus. He even got an OSCAR nomination! After all he is a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude.

- Zodiac

Downey Jr starred alongside Jake Gyllenhaal and Mark Ruffalo in this David Fincher film based on the infamous Zodiac killer.

RDJ portrayed the crime reporter, Paul Avery, whose newspaper, The San Francisco Chronicle, received puzzling letters from a serial killer nicknamed, Zodiac. Creepy stuff.

This is one of the best crime dramas of recent years as director David Fincher delivered a tense movie with suspense at ever turn. The ensemble cast delivered fantastic performances; RDJ was one of those standout turns.

- Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

In this comedy crime caper Downey Jr players a thief who finds himself masquerading as an actor. Check out this weird scene when RDJ gets an unwelcome surprise in the toilet.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang sees RDJ on great comedic form as his witty one liners and timing shows what a great comedy actor his is.

The movie is driven forward by the great on screen relationship RDJ has with Val Kilmer - who plays private investigator Gay Perry - in what turns into a great buddy film.

- Chaplin

His portrayal as Charlie Chaplin garnered critical acclaim across the world with an Academy Award nomination and a BAFTA for best actor.

It was no mean feat but Downey Jr managed to pull off the tricky task of portraying one of the greatest comedy legends ever.

He really gets under the skin of this character as he masters the wide range of English accents and mimicking of Chaplin. This remains one of the best performances of RDJ’s career.

- Only You

Marisa Tomei is RDJ’s love interest in this 1994 romantic comedy. Tomei’s character is about to get married but realises her fate lies with a man called Damon Bradley.

How does she know this I hear you ask? A Ouija board told her when she was eleven of course! But will she find her Damon Bradley?

- Iron Man

Nowadays, when you think of Robert Downey Jr you think of Iron Man. The New York born actor brings bucket loads of charisma, arrogance and of course style to the role of Tony Stark that has crowds flocking to the cinema.

Iron Man was the movie that really did put RDJ back on the acting map; he went from troubled star to Hollywood A-lister practically overnight.

RDJ has led this franchise to mammoth success - the third instalment took over $1 billion and is the fifth biggest grossing movies of all time.

- Natural Born Killers

Platoon director, Oliver Stone, was at the helm for this controversial film that saw two lovers becomes psychopathic serial killers.

Robert Downey Junior plays tabloid journalist, Wayne Gale, who profiles the killer couple on his television show. The question is…does it all end well for RDJ?

This is a dark and violent film, but RDJ’s character does bring a little comic relief to this Oliver Stone directed film.

- Avengers Assemble

We couldn’t ignore Downey’s shining role as Iron Man in Avengers Assemble. Teaming up with other superheroes, RDJ still manages to ooze more charm, bravery and yet again style than any of the other Avengers.

This may be an ensemble film but it is really RDJ that takes centre stage; however he never overshadows the performances of the rest of the cast.

Avengers Assemble is the most successful superhero movie of all time as it grossed over $1.5 billion last summer. The Avengers: Age of Ultron is already one of the most anticipated films, and it will not be hitting the big screen until 2015.

- Hearts and Souls

Let’s head back to the early 90s as Downey Junior plays the lead in this quirky fantasy comedy.

As businessman, Tom Riley, he has to help four dead people who can’t reach the afterlife until they’ve completed several tasks.

- Sherlock Holmes

Downey Junior rejuvenated the classic Conan Doyle character as the cheeky, often lazy but undeniably clever Sherlock Holmes.

With Jude Law as his Dr Watson this is a duo that will not only make you smile but get to the bottom of the crimes of Victorian London.

Sherlock Holmes was a big box office hit and RDJ went on to win a Golden Globe for his fantastic central performance.

Other RDJ movies to check out include The Soloist, A Scanner Darkly, Good Night and Good Luck and Wonder Boys.

Marvel’s Iron Man 3 is released on Blu-ray and DVD, September 9th and Thor: the Dark World is in cinemas October 30th.
