Short Term 12

Short Term 12

Starring: Brie Larson, John Gallagher Jr., Stephanie Beatriz

Director: Destin Cretton

Rating: 4/5

Short Term 12 is a film that lit up the festival circuit last year, and now the critically acclaimed movie has made it to DVD.

Told through the eyes of Grace (Larson), a twenty-something supervisor at a foster-care facility for at-risk teenagers, Short Term 12 is written and directed by Destin Cretton.

Passionate and tough, Grace is a formidable caretaker of the kids in her charge, and in love with her long-term boyfriend and co-worker, Mason (Gallagher Jr).

However, Grace’s own difficult past, and the surprising future that suddenly presents itself, throw her into unforeseen confusion, made all the sharper with the arrival of a new intake at the facility: a gifted but troubled teenage girl with whom Grace has a charged connection.

If you have not seen Short Term 12 yet, then it really is a movie that you have to see, as it is a gem of an independent film.

Destin Cretton really is a director to watch out for as he has delivered a heartbreaking and devastating drama about the lasting effects of childhood abuse.

In one moment, Cretton creates scenes that are packed with humour and brightness, before plunging the audience into world of anguish and pain. Cretton does this with such ease, which is really what makes Short Term 12 a rollercoaster of a movie.

Brie Larson delivers a career best performance in the central role of Grace, a woman who is struggling to come to terms with what happened to her as a child.

There is something incredibly natural and human about Larson's performance as she slowly comes to terms with her past.

This movie really will be a stepping-stone for Larson, and I am excited to see the movies and the characters that she will explore going forward.

Short Term 12 is an intelligent movie that is smartly and compassionately written.

From the very start, there is something very human about the story and the central characters, and you really do feel every moment of pain.

Short Term 12 is a movie that is as uplifting as it is devastating and is truly hard to forget.
