Sylvester Stallone in Bullet To The Head

Sylvester Stallone in Bullet To The Head

Sylvester Stallone is one of the greatest action actors to ever grace the big screen and he is back this week with his new movie Bullet To The Head.

And this movie sees him as mean as ever as he shows the younger guys how it is done.

To celebrate the return of Stallone this week we take a look at some of his finest action movies.

- First Blood

First Blood is one of the best action movies of all time as a generation of young boys wanted to be John Rambo.

But as you return to this film as you get older you see that it is a movie that tackled some powerful images - none more important than the after effects that the Vietnam War had on the men that fought it.

First Blood is the best film in the Rambo franchise and is perhaps more of a psychological thriller than just a mindless action movie.

Stallone delivered a powerful central performance and an iconic character was born.

First Blood is one of the most influential movies in this genre of all time and changed the face of the action film.

- Cliffhanger

In 1993 Stallone teamed up with director Renny Harlin for action/thriller Cliffhanger.

A botched mid-air heist results in suitcases full of cash being searched for by various groups throughout the Rocky Mountains putting a team of rescue rangers in danger.

Cliffhanger is a tense thriller from start to finish and that is heightened even further by the dangerous and unforgiving setting for the film.

The mountain ranger brings it's own dangers and menace to this film that work incredibly well.

Stallone is at his tortured action hero best in this film while John Lithgow was the perfect villain.

The movie was a box office smash and a critical success and it still remains one of Stallone's best movies.

- Rocky

If you create one iconic character in your career you are doing well but to have two is a real achievement and Rocky is the other role that Stallone is really remembered for.

Where this quite fits into the action genre I am not quite sure - it certainly is one of the best boxing films of all time - but you can't not talk about this awesome film.

It was 1976 when Stallone played Rocky Balboa for the first time and he also penned the screenplay.

Rocky is one of the greatest underdog stories of all time and Stallone picked up a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his central role.

Rocky turned into a fantastic franchise and it remains one of the best film movie series of all time.

- Demolition Man

The early nineties was a prime time for Stallone as an action here and he was back on the big screen in 1993 with Demolition Man - a movie that saw him team up with Wesley Snipes.

Cop John Spartan is brought out of suspended animation in prison to pursue an old ultra-violent enemy who is loose in a nonviolent future society.

Stallone took on the role of Spartan in the film and it is a movie that allowed his comedic side to come through as well as showing off his action credentials.

Directed by Marco Brambilla the movie really did find that perfect balance between action and comedy while Stallone and Snipes were fantastic enemies who bantered well together.

- The Expendables

In recent years Stallone has brought another action franchise to the big screen in the form of the fantastic The Expendables.

The first film was released back in 2010 and saw Stallone in the director's chair as well as on the cast list.

He brought together some of the biggest action names including Jet Li, Jason Statham and Dolph Lundgren.

The movie was incredibly tongue in cheek and embraced everything that is over the top about this genre.

The Expendables topped the box office and the franchise was born - a sequel followed this year and a third film is believed to be in the pipeline.

- Bullet To The Head

Bullet To The Head sees Stallone team up with director Walter Hill for this new action film.

The movie is based on the French graphic novel Du Plomb Dans La Tete by Alexis Nolent and sees Stallone team up with Jason Momoa, Sarah Shahi and Christian Slater.

An unlikely alliance between a cop and a hitman takes place after each watches his partner die.

The new partners seek revenge and discover they have a shared enemy and much in common despite being on opposite sides of the law.
