The Artist was the big winner at the Oscars last night as it walked away with five gongs, including Best Picture, Best Director & Best Actor.

But there were few surprises on the night as all the favourites walked away with awards.

The Artist has been the one to beat on the awards circuit over the last few weeks and it proved to be the case again last night as it got the better of The Descendants.

The two films went head to head in Best Picture, Best Director & best Actor with the black ad white silent movie coming out on top in all three.

George Clooney's wait for Best Actor Oscar goes on as first time nominee Jean Dujardin scooped the prize.

It may have been a thirty year wait but Meryl Streep finally got her hands on another Best Actress prize for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

Streep's favourite tag slipped last week with some bookmakers as Viola Davis just snuck ahead for her role in The Help - but it was not to be.

In the supporting categories the dominance of Octavia Spencer and Christopher Plummer went on as they were recognised once again for their work in The Help & Beginners.

But The Descendants did not go away empty handed as Alexander Payne did gets his hands on an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

There was also a win for Woody Allen for Best Original Screenplay for the super charming movie Midnight In Paris.

Rango was the big winner in the animation category whilst A Separation can now add the Oscar to it's growing collection of awards for Best Foreign Film.
