The Descendants

The Descendants

When it comes to the Academy Awards there is no category more exciting than Best Picture.

This year we have nine movie competing from the top prize but there seem to be only two that everyone is talking about.

In the last few years there have been a couple of two horse races when it comes to Best Picture; The Hurt Locker vs Avatar & The Social Network vs The Kings's Speech - and it looks like 2012 is going to be no different.

It seems that all anyone can talk about it The Descendants and The Artist and the two films are set to go head to head once again.

The two movies both walked away with Golden Globes last week; The Descendants took Best Picture Drama while The Artist won Best Picture - Comedy or Musical.

However there are seven other movies that make up this category; Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, The Help, Hugo, Midnight In Paris, Moneyball, The Tree of Life and War Horse.

Now I fully expect to see George Clooney to see off the competition from Jean Dujardin for Best actor and this could be a factor in where the Best Picture Oscar goes.

Having said that there is perhaps one movie that could rain on the parade of The Descendants and The Artist and that movie is Hugo.

Yes Martin Scorsese has directed a very charming movie that the whole world seems to have just fallen in love with.

Hugo led the Oscar nominations with eleven nods and it could be the one film to watch in this category.

But I do think that The Artist will walk away with the gong simply because it is so different to anything else that we have seen this year.

But before then we have the Screen Actors Guild and Bafta Awards and they will provide further indications as to what will win what.
