The Conjuring

The Conjuring

We are half way through our search for the Best Movies of 2013, and we have already reflected on some very fine films.

In at number five comes the best horror movie that I saw all year... of course, I am talking about The Conjuring.

Before there was Amityville, there was Harrisville. "The Conjuring" tells the true story of Ed and Lorraine Warren (Wilson, & Farmiga), world renowned paranormal investigators, who were called to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in a secluded farmhouse.

Forced to confront a powerful demonic entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most horrifying case of their lives.

I have to admit that horror movies aren't really my thing - I tend to find them all quite boring. However, The Conjuring has everything that a classic horror movie should have.

The movie marked the return of James Wan to the director's chair, and he is did not rely on torture porn, blood, guts and gore and CGI to create his chills and his shivers.

Instead, there is a classic horror feel to this movie as Wan used atmosphere and ambiance to create the scares.

This is a fairly standard 'haunted house' plot, but is Wan's hands this has a fresh and new feel to it; believe me when I tell you that it is incredibly creepy.

Wan builds and builds the atmosphere as every scene and moment just racks up the tension until every creak and door banging will have you jumping out of your seat.

The Conjuring is masterfully crafted as Wan shows how to make a truly fantastic horror movie; there is not a graphic scene of slasher moment in sight.

Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson are in the central roles of paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren, and they really go give two very fine performances.

They are not depicted as ghost hunters or glory seekers, but a husband and wife team that have a gift/ability.

The Conjuring is not just the best horror movie that I have seen in 2013, but one of the best films I have seen in this genre for quite some time.
