The Railway Man

The Railway Man

2013 may not be over but we are already looking ahead to the great films that are on the horizon at the beginning of the new year - and boy are there a whole host that we are getting excited about.

One of the early films not to miss comes in the form of The Railway Man, a movie that will see Colin Firth return to the big screen.

If you haven’t seen the trailer yet then you really should check it out as this promises to be a powerful story about war the effects that the experiences had on the soldiers.

The Railway Man is based on the memoir by Eric Lomax; a role that both Firth and Jeremy Irvine will play in the role. Irvine will play the young Lomax who is captured by the Japanese and set to a POW camp.

Firth will play the older version of Lomax, a man who is still struggling to come to terms with what happened to him during that tough period of his life.

Firth is an actor who seems to get better with age having delivered terrific performances in A Single Man and The King’s Speech - both of which earnt him an Oscar nomination; the latter of which saw him win Best Actor.

Irvine on the other hand, is a young actor who is still very much on the rise, but has films such as War Horse and Great Expectations under his belt.

Firth and Irvine are joined by an all-star cast as Nicole Kidman,Stellan Skarsgård, and Hiroyuki Sanada are also on board.

The Railway Man also marks the return of Jonathan Teplitzky to the director’s chair in what is his first feature film since Burning Man. Getting’ Square and Better Than Sex are some of Teplitzky’s previous work, but this film promises to be one of his most powerful.

The Railway Man tells the extraordinary and epic true story of Eric Lomax, a British Army officer who is tormented as a prisoner of war at a Japanese labour camp during World War II.

Decades later, Lomax discovers that the Japanese interpreter he holds responsible for much of his treatment is still alive and sets out to confront him, and his haunting past.

The Railway Man may not necessarily be the most upbeat way to kick of the 2014 film year, but it will be exciting to see Firth deliver another great performance.

The Railway Man is released 10th January 2014.
