Gus Van Sant is back in the director's chair this week as he reunites with Matt Damon for Promised Land.

Van Sant has enjoyed a career that has already spanned over thirty years and has seen him pick up two Best Director Oscar nominations for his work.

To celebrate the release of Promised Land this week we take a look at some of Van Sant's best work.

Milk (2009)

One of the standout moments of Van Sant's career came at the end of 2008 and beginning of 2009 when he helmed Milk.

The movie saw the director team up with Sean Penn to bring the story of Harvey Milk to the big screen - a man who fought for gay rights and became California's first openly gay elected official.

This is a political biopic is an incredibly involving and inspiring movie and that is because of Van Sant's directorial style and Penn's stunning central performance.

Milk was a massive critical hit and went on to be nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director for Van Sant. The movie went on to win Best Actor for Penn.

Good Will Hunting (1998)

It was back in 1998 when Good Will Hunting hit the big screen and it remains favourite of Van Sant's movies.

The movie saw Van Sant team up with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon who penned the screenplay and starred in the movie with Robin Williams.

Good Will Hunting is a movie that is directed with real care and while it is touching and has real heart is never over sentimental as Van Sant keeps the story on the right side of dramatic.

There were towering performance from all involved in this project and this movie really won over critics and audiences upon its release.

Nine Oscar nominations follows, including Best Picture and Best Director for Van Sant. It went on to win Best Supporting Actor for Williams and Best Original Screenplay for Damon and Affleck.

My Own Private Idaho (1992)

Gus Van Sant showed off his writing skills in 1991/2 when he penned the screenplay for My Own Private Idaho.

The movie was loosely based on Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part 1, Henry IV, Part 2, and Henry V and saw Van Sant also in the director's chair.

The film saw Van Sant team up with two of the hottest young stars of the time as River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves team up to play the lead roles.

The movie is perhaps the most personal movies that Van Sant has ever made and was is an incredibly emotional film.

My Own Private Idaho did well on the festival circuit and was a hit with the critics.

Elephant (2003)

Cannes Film Festival success came Van Sant's way in 2003 when he won the Palme d'Or at the festival.

Van Sant penned the screenplay and was in the director's chair for the film while Alex Frost and Eric Deulen were on the cast list.

Elephant was a bold movie that was not afraid of to look at the trouble of America's youth.

Elephant was a movie that was met with great critical acclaim and enjoyed a great run on the festival circuit.

Promised Land (2013)

Van Sant is back in the director's chair this week as he once again teams up with Matt Damon for Promised Land.

Damon and John Krasinski penned the screenplay and the film is based on the story of Dave Eggers.

A salesman for a natural gas company experiences life-changing events after arriving in a small town, where his corporation wants to tap into the available resources.

Promised Land is released 19th April
