Matt Smith is best known for play The Doctor in smash hit television series Doctor Who, but he is set to make the leap onto the big screen this year.

Since leaving the Tardis behind, Smith has been working on a series of exciting film projects - Lost River set to be the first to be released this week.

Lost River marks the feature film directorial debut for actor Ryan Gosling and sees Smith star alongside Saoirse Ronan, Christina Hendricks, Eva Mendes, and Iain De Caestecker.

Lost River will mark Smith's return to the big screen for the first time since Clone and will kick off what will be a very busy movie year for him.

Lost River will not be the biggest film success that Smith will enjoy this year - the movie struggled with the critics when it was premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year. However, Lost River is set to be unlike any other film that you see this year as Gosling tries to find his directorial style.

Having said all of that, it is great to see Smith taking on varied roles as he tries to move away from Doctor Who and establish himself as a major big screen star.

And that could well happen later this year with Terminator Genisys - which is the biggest film and role of his movie career to date. Terminator Genisys is the fifth film in the popular series and will see Alan Taylor at the helm for the first time.

Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke, and Jai Courtney will take over the roles of Sarah Connor, John Connor, and Kyle Reese, while Arnold Schwarzenegger is back as The Terminator. Smith is on board as Tim - a T-5000 - a major role that could be reprised in future films.

This new film in the series will explore the theme of Reese being send back to protect Sarah Connor, but this time Reese will find himself in an altered past.

Terminator Genisys is set to be one of the biggest films of the summer and could well help send Smith's star rocketing this year. I can't wait to see him tackle this big budget blockbuster and it is going to be great to see him in action this summer.

We have been treated to a couple of trailers from the film already and it really does look like it is going to be an action packed ride. While I have not always been a huge fan of this franchise, I am looking forward to see what the director and cast deliver this time around.

As if all that wasn't enough, we are also going to be seeing Smith tackle the comedy/horror with Pride & Prejudice and Zombies. The movie is based on the novel by Seth Grahame-Smith, which is inspired by the original book by Jane Austen.

Set in 19th Century England, we come face to face with the Bennett sisters, but as we have never seen them before... they are now zombie killers.

Smith is set to take on the role of Mr Collins alongside Lily James, Lena Headey, Douglas Booth, Charles Dance, Jack Huston, and Sam Riley - this really does promise to be a whole lot of fun. However, not UK release date for this film has yet been announced.

Smith has also been cast in new horror film Patient Zero, which Stefan Ruzowitzky back in the director's chair for the first time since Deadfall. Natalie Dormer, Stanley Tucci, and Clive Standen will be joining Smith on the cast list.

Smith is already a household name here in the UK after his exploits in Doctor Who, but he is one to really watch out for over the next year or so. With some great movie projects completed and Patient Zero on the horizon, Smith is set to show off his versatility as an actor and enjoy huge success.

Lost River is released 10th April.
