Tom Hardy

Tom Hardy

Tom Hardy returns to the big screen this week with a fabulous solo performance in the totally riveting Locke: a movie that sees him team up with director and writer Steven Knight for the first time.

Hardy has become one of the most exciting actors currently working in Hollywood, and Locke is another film that shows off his great range and versatility - he really does deliver a terrific turn in the central role of Ivan Locke.

In recent years, Hardy has become one of the most in demand stars as he has moved from blockbusters such as The Dark Knight Rises, to political thriller with Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, to science fiction with Inception.

And we are going to be seeing plenty of him over the next year or so, with a wide range of exciting projects in the pipeline. We take a look at some of the movies you should be looking out for if you are a fan of this fine actor.

We had the chance to catch Locke when it played at the BFI London Film Festival at the end of last year, and it really was one of the finest films on the festival line-up.

Ivan Locke (Hardy) has the perfect family, his dream job, and tomorrow should be the crowning moment of his career. But one phone call will force him to make a decision that will put it all on the line.

While we only see Hardy on the screen, there are some great voice performances by Andrew Scott, Olivia Colman and Ruth Wilson, as the have phone conversations with Hardy. Locke is one of the best films of 2014 so far, and I urge you not to miss it.

The Drop is another film that we are going to be seeing Hardy in later this year, as he stars alongside James Gandolfini: this will be the final big screen from the actor, who sadly passed away last year.

The movie is based on the short story Animal Rescue by Dennis Lehane: he has adapted his own story into a screenplay. Lehane is no stranger to the big screen with his novels Shutter Island, Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone all being made into movies, but this is the first time he has penned the screenplay.

The Drop follows Bob Malinowski (Hardy) who finds himself at the centre of a robbery gone awry and entwined in an investigation that digs deep into the neighbourhood’s past where friends, families, and foes all work together to make a living - no matter the cost.

The movie marks the return of Michael R. Roskam to the director’s chair for the first time since he made his debut with Bullhead back in 2011.

In recent years, we have seen Hardy star alongside Gary Oldman on quite a few occasions, and now they are set to share the screen once more in Child 44.

This drama/thriller is another adaptation of the actor, as Tom Rob Smith’s novel is given the big screen treatment by director Daniel Espinosa.

A terrific cast has been assembled for the film as Hardy and Oldman are joined by Noomi Rapace, Joel Kinnaman, Jason Clarke, Vincent Cassel and Paddy Considine.

Set in Stalin-era Soviet Union, a disgraced MGB agent is dispatched to investigate a series of child murders -- a case that begins to connect with the very top of party leadership.

This will be the first film for Espinosa since Safe House, and it sees him work with Hardy for the first time.

Mad Max: Fury Road is a movie that many of us have been waiting to see for some time, as Hardy takes on the role of Max Rockatansky.

George Miller was behind the first three Mad Max movies, and now he is returning to the director’s chair for this latest instalment: which is set to bring this franchise to a new generation.

Not much about the plot is actually known, but a great cast is on show as Hardy is joined by Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Zoe Kravitz, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

There seems to be no rest for Hardy as he is currently filming musical London Road - yes, Hardy is going to be starring in a musical.

While nothing is known about the plot, Rufus Norris is in the director’s chair, as he makes his second feature film.

Kate Fleetwood, Lee Nicholas Harris, Calvin Demba and Eloise Laurence are all also on board, and the movie will be released next year.

Hardy is also set to take on the role of Elton John in the new biopic Rocketman: which is set to look at the life and career of the popular musician.

Rocket man - which is currently in pre-production - will be directed by Michael Gracey, while Lee Hall has penned the screenplay. No official release date or full cast list has yet been announced.

If you are a Tom Hardy fan, you have plenty to look forward to over the next year or so. I personally cannot wait to see him take on the role of Elton John - it promises to be a fascinating biopic.

Locke is released 18th April
