Earlier this week it was announced that Tom Holland was taking over the role of Spider-Man in the new Marvel reboot of the franchise... but just who is the young actor?

Holland is set to see is his star rocket next year when he makes his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War; a solo movie will follow in 2017. This will be the third incarnation of Peter Parker in just over a decade - Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield have already played the role over five different movies - and now we are going to see Marvel make a Spider-Man film for the first time.

While Holland has been preparing for his role as a much young Peter Parker than we have seen on film before, it was only announced last week that he had landed the role. Holland had been in the running for the part ever since it was announced that Spider-Man was returning to the Marvel fold.

Holland kicked off his acting career back in 2010 when he lent his voice the UK dubbed version of Studio Ghibli movie Arietty. However, it wasn't until The Impossible at the beginning of 2013 that he made his big screen debut.

The Impossible, which saw J.A. Bayona in the director's chair, followed the real-life story of a family that caught up in the tsunami that hit Thailand back in 2004. Holland played the oldest son of Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor, in what was a powerful and moving performance from the young and inexperienced actor.

The Impossible was one of the best movies of 2013 and was a film that really earmarked Holland as an acting talent to watch out for. Later that year, he teamed up with Saoirse Ronan and George MacKay in How I Live Now.

How I Live Now is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Meg Rosoff and saw Holland work with director Kevin Macdonald for the first time.

The youngster has since turned his hand to television as he starred in the critical acclaimed historical dram Wolf Hall earlier this year.

And we are going to be seeing plenty of Holland on the big screen over the next year or so as he has already completed work on Pilgrimage, Backcountry, and In the Heart of the Sea.

In the Heart of the Sea sees Holland work with another exciting filmmaker as Ron Howard is back in the director's chair. The movie is based on the book non-fiction book of the same name by Nathaniel Philbrick, which chronicled the sinking of the whaleship Essex.

Set in 1820, the movie follows a whaling ship that is stalked by a sperm whale - stranding the crew at sea for ninety days and thousands of miles from home.

Holland takes on the role of Young Thomas Nickerson, and is joined on the cast list by Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy, Brandan Gleeson, Ben Whishaw, and Paul Anderson. The movie is being tipped as one to watch out for when the Oscar nominations are announced at the beginning of next year.

Tom Holland is a young actor who is well and truly on the rise as he has a whole host of exciting and high profile movie projects on the horizon in 2015 and 2016. However, no movie will be more talked about than his introduction as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War next year.

Holland will join the likes of Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr, Jeremy Renner, and Anthony Mackie on the cast list, while Anthony and Joe Russo are back in the director's chair. Holland will not be the only new face on the cast list as we are also going to see Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther for the first time.

A year later, we will see Holland star in his first Spider-Man solo film and he looks set to take up his place as an Avenger in the upcoming - and already highly anticipated - Infinity War. It looks like it is going to be a very exciting couple of years for Holland.

Filming on Captain America: Civil War is under way and the movie will be released 29th April 2016.
