The Batgirl movie project has been in the works for some time now, with a series of names dropping in and out of the creative process. When Birds of Prey hit cinemas in February 2020, some had hoped that the actor who would eventually be playing Barbara Gordon in the DC Extended Universe would make a surprise appearance.

Alas, it wasn’t to be, which probably means that the actor stepping into the shoes of the fan-favourite hero hasn’t yet been confirmed; not surprising since the film currently doesn’t have a director, and we’ve heard zero updates for some time. Still, that got us thinking, just who would be perfect to take on the character?

Here are our top seven suggestions for who should play Batgirl in the upcoming DC movie…

7. Zoey Deutch

After bagging her first lead role back in 2014 in Vampire Academy, Zoey Deutch has been on an upward trajectory that shows no signs of slowing down. She's made us all laugh in Ryan Murphy's Netflix comedy series The Politician, and again in zombie comedy sequel Zombieland: Double Tap, gaining acclaim for her performances in both.

Fans of Ed Sheeran may recognise her from the Perfect music video, whilst others may know her from prominent roles in television series Ringer or even from her 2010-11 time playing Maya Bennett in Disney Channel’s The Suite Life on Deck.

With both the looks and the ability to bring Batgirl to life, we think Deutch would be an incredible addition to the DCEU.

6. Sophia Lillis

Playing the young Beverly Marsh in director Andy Muschietti's Stephen King adaptations IT and IT: Chapter Two, Sophia Lillis proved that she was one of the most exciting rising stars of the modern generation. Able to project a whole host of different emotions on screen, she’s undeniably one to watch for the next few years, if not decades.

Now that she's firmly established as a major star of today, she's currently signed on for the movies The Burning Season and The Thicket, which are in pre-production. Adding one more film in the form of Batgirl to that list would make a lot of people very happy!

5. Ashley Greene

Barbara Gordon is no stranger to Ashley Greene; the actor has actually voiced the character, otherwise known as Oracle in the Arkham video game series. After making a massive impression on players, many thought she should make the jump to live action with her portrayal.

Despite playing one of the main characters in the Twilight film series, Greene has struggled to really break out with other big screen projects. It’s a shame, because she’s certainly one of the most talented members to come from the Twilight roster; she’s just not had the opportunity to showcase her acting chops in front of the camera in a well-written role since the franchise’s movie adaptations came to a close.

Batgirl could change all of that. We’d love to see her given a chance here.

4. Jane Levy

In recent years, Jane Levy has enjoyed a bevy of different roles across both the big and small screen. Those have included the lead role in horror film Don't Breathe, following her breakout in 2013's Evil Dead, as well as the mysterious character Jackie Torrance in TV series Castle Rock and the titular role in Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist.

Across a host of genres, Levy has proved she’s more than capable of adapting her performance in front of the camera to suit the character she’s playing, so we’re confident that she’d be able to do the same for the DC superhero Batgirl. It’d certainly be different to anything she’s taken on before!

3. Anya Taylor-Joy

Enjoying her big screen breakthrough with 2015 period horror The Witch, Anya Taylor-Joy would go on to win multiple accolades and become one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood. This will undoubtedly have put her on the list of names that anybody working on Batgirl in the future would potentially want involved in their film.

Recently, Taylor-Joy took the lead in Netflix original series The Queen’s Gambit, garnering critical acclaim for her performance. This could be yet another stepping stone towards one of the biggest roles of her career, as part of the DCEU.

2. Sadie Sink

If those who eventually come together to work on the big screen story of Barbara Gordon decide that they want the character to debut in her younger years, then you can’t go wrong with the casting of Stranger Things star, Sadie Sink. She would be a compelling and utterly realistic teenage version of the future superhero, charming the audience with her projection of confidence in front of the camera.

We'll see more of Sink on the big screen in 2021, with both Fear Street and Fear Street 2 set to hit cinemas, alongside the movie Dear Zoe. All three of those are in post-production, so she’s now got some time to add a new project to her schedule; DC should act fast to scoop her up before she’s committed elsewhere!

1. Alexa Mansour

Currently starring in The Walking Dead spinoff series World Beyond, Alexa Mansour is an actor who has showcased a variety of different personalities and characteristics through her work. Whether she’s happy and excited, scared and upset, or confident and electric, she shines in front of the camera. All of these traits would combine to make for an awesome Barbara Gordon.

Mansour is no stranger to the big screen, having played a main part in the horror movie Unfriended: Dark Web. Taking on Batgirl would undoubtedly be her big break however, opening her up to future job opportunities unlike anything she’s had the chance to be a part of to-date.

We'll bring you updates on the planned Batgirl movie as and when we get them.
