Sadly, 2015 has not been a vintage year when it has come to mainstream horror movies - in fact, it has been a pretty barren couple of years.

Insidious: Chapter 3

Insidious: Chapter 3

While we have seen a whole host of horror film hit the big screen, none has really set the world alight or got cinema tills ringing. Insidious: Chapter 3 was just one of the horror sequels that was released this year and it has made it to number ten as we kick our countdown of the Worst Movies of 2015.

It was back in 2010 when we were introduced to the Insidious franchise for the first time. Insidious was a great horror watch but, sadly, the other films in the franchise have not lived up to the first film.

Insidious: Chapter 3 is by no means the worst film that I have seen this year, but it is one of the most disappointing as I was hoping to see the story go in a completely different direction to the films that had come before.

Leigh Whannell is in the director's chair and has penned the screenplay and while he starts the film of nicely and builds the tension, but he fails to see that all the way through to the end.

For me, the tension that Whannel builds at the beginning of the film is lost when they show the demon far too soon. At a distance, this character really does ramp up the tension and the suspense. However, as soon as we get a real up close look, all of that is gone as the creature reveal is a major let-down - which has been the way with a lot of horror films of late.

It is a shame to see all of this early promise disappear as the tension, the suspense, and the horror slowly slips away and it becomes a run of the mill - and rather disappointing - horror film.

While early stages of the film promise more, Insidious: Chapter 3 doesn't re-invent the wheel and this really is a generic and predictable horror film - you can see the end coming a mile off and that is a major shame.

Insidious: Chapter 3 really does lack the thrills and the chills of the first film and will leave you more disappointed that scared - which is not what I want when I sit down to watch a horror film. Having said that, Insidious: Chapter 3 is not the only horror to leave me feeling pretty cold this year.

Dermot Mulroney and Stefanie Scott are two new names on the cast list as they play father and daughter Sean and Quinn Brenner. The duo both give solid performances, but it is Lin Shaye who does give the standout turn.

Shaye has been with the Insidious franchise from the start and she reprises the role of Elise Rainier as they explore the story's origins. Shaye strikes the perfect balance between this caring woman and a strong demon vanquishing heroine - I think she strikes this balance beautifully. The actress keeps all of the qualities that made her such a likeable character in the first film, but perhaps shows an even tougher side than ever before.

For me, Elise is the film's most interesting and rich character and is a shame to see the story fall down around an actress who has given such a terrific performance.

Insidious: Chapter 3 does offer small things to enjoy but, the film as a whole, really is incredibly underwhelming and is a major disappointment.
