Here we are at number nine in our Worst Movies of 2015 countdown and sadly, Terminator Genisys is making an appearance.

Terminator Genisys

Terminator Genisys

Terminator Genisys is the fifth film in the sci-fi series and looked set to be one of biggest and best blockbusters of the summer... however, it did not work out that way as it was a film that was a major dud.

The movie marked the return of Alan Taylor to the director's chair for his first feature since Thor: The Dark World. Arnold Schwarzenegger reprised the role of the Terminator, while Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, and Jason Clarke took over the roles of Sarah Connor, Kyle Reese, and John Connor for the first time.

Terminator Genisys took us back to 1984 as Kyle Reese is sent back to protect Sarah Connor in order to safeguard the future. However, and unexpected turn creates a fractured timeline and Sarah has been raised and protected by a reprogrammed Terminator, known as the Guardian.

The early trailers for the film really did promise an action-packed ride that would get the Terminator franchise back on track. Instead, we got set piece after set piece and none of the intelligence, great story, or interesting characters that the first couple of movies in this franchise was known for.

There's no denying that the Terminator franchise was once a mighty one and it is so sad to have watched its demise over the years... for some reason, no one seems to be able to get this one right.

I had no problem with the plotline going back over familiar ground - as long as it offered something new. Sadly, it fails to do that and the plot get more and more ridiculous as we go along. There's no denying that the special effect look great, but it becomes mindless action sequences to paper over the massive cracks in the storyline and the lack of interesting character development.

2015 was not a vintage summer for blockbusters and Terminator Genisys was just one that disappointed but everything that made the first two movies so great has been well and truly list. For me, if you can't make a movie that at least equals what has gone before, then you shouldn't really bother. Terminator Genisys doesn't come anywhere close to matching the first two movies in this once great franchise.

Sarah Connor is one of the greatest female film characters of all time and the first two movies were very much about female empowerment and this great character standing up and fighting for herself. Emilia Clarke - who is best known for her role in Game of Thrones - does the best with what she has, but there is little here to get long-standing fans excited about this once terrific character.

This movie simply doesn't work on every level and a bunch of talented actors - one of which is an icon - cannot save this film as they are not given anything to build on. The story is paper thin and ridiculous and the lack of development of the central characters really is very poor. You really do have to wonder just how much thought has gone into this film before they started making it.

If you want to see a great Terminator film, look up the first two movies and give this one a total miss as it really cannot be compared to the original.
