2016 really is shaping up to be one of the best years for comic book movies and this summer we are going to see X-Men: Apocalypse hit the big screen.

X-Men: Apocalypse

X-Men: Apocalypse

I am a huge fan of the X-Men franchise and X-Men: Apocalypse is one of the 2016 blockbuster films that I really am looking forward to the most. It is the first X-Men film since the huge critical and commercial success of Days of Future Past in 2014 and marks the return of Bryan Singer to the director's chair.

This is the fourth X-Men film of Singer's career and each film he directs is better than his last - I am always excited when I see him at the helm of this franchise. This is his first feature since the success of Days of Future Past and it is always great to see him back.

When it comes to summer cast lists, X-Men Apocalypse boasts one of the most impressive as James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Evan Peters and Rose Byrne are some of the familiar names returning.

However, there are some new additions to watch out for as Oscar Isaac, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smith-McPhee, and Olivia Munn take on the roles of Apocalypse, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Nightcrawler, and Psylocke for the very first time. I cannot wait to meet the younger versions of X-Men characters that we already know so well.

Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel's X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign.

As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Lawrence) with the help of Professor X ( McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.

Not only did Days of Future Past enjoy critical acclaim in 2014, the film also went on to gross in excess of $747 at the global box office. It was one of the highest-grossing films of the year and the most successful film in the X-Men franchise.

Can X-Men: Apocalypse perform even better? It really does look like it is going to be the biggest instalment yet and it already has box office smash written all over it. X-Men: Apocalypse is on course to be one of the biggest films of the summer and could come very close to equalling or surpassing the total posted by its predecessor two years ago.

This could be the last time that we see some of these actors take on these roles and I think Singer will want to bring their time with the franchise to an end with an almighty bang.

X-Men: Apocalypse is set to kick off the summer blockbuster season in style and I get the sense that it is going to be a film that will not disappoint. I really cannot wait to see what Singer and co deliver this time around. There's still no word on whether we will see Hugh Jackman make an appearance as Wolverine.

X-Men: Apocalypse is released 18th May.
