Rock in Rio President and Founder Roberto Medina said of the news: "30 years ago, Queen performed in front of 250,000 people who fell in love with the band, and it became one of the most iconic moments of Rock in Rio.

"I am positive that the moments from 30 years ago will be rejuvenated and rejoiced with Queen + Adam Lambert, making it again a moment no one will ever forget."

Queen took their chance in the 70s to ascend to rock royalty, becoming one of the biggest stadium rock bands in the world by the arrival of the 80s, and pushing all boundaries within their field.

The group became the first ever act to undertake a stadium tour of South America, going on to play world cup stadiums in Brazil and Argentina, which ended with two nights at Brazil's Morumbi Stadium in San Paulo on March 20 and 21, 1981.

Going on to book two nights at Rock in Rio in January 1985, Queen played to an audience of over 500,000 whilst being televised to over 60 countries across the world, watched at home by a further 200 million.

A thrilled Freddie Mercury said at the time: "We came to South America originally because we were invited down. They wanted four wholesome lads to play some nice music. Now I'd like to buy up the entire continent and install myself as President".

Three decades on, Queen are set to return to the festival with Adam Lambert taking on lead vocals, headlining the main stage on the opening night of Friday, September 18.

Drummer Roger Taylor said: "How great to be coming back to Rio to rock you even harden than before."

Adam Lambert added: "I'm so excited to be joining Queen at Rock in Rio! This will be a triumphant return for them, and my first time in South America!"

The full Rock in Rio festival event runs over two weekends for seven nights - September 18, 19 and 20, and September 24, 25, 26 and 27.

Further announcements are expected in the coming weeks and months, with other artists confirmed to play the stage already including Katy Perry, Queens of the Stone Age, John Legend, Metallica, Hollywood Vampires, Slipknot, A-Ha, System of a Down and Faith No More.
