Greatest Break Up Songs

2 months ago 02nd Sep 14:41

I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor

We've all been there - well most of us - and it's true that breaking up is one of the hardest things to do, but at the end of the day, we all have to pick up the pieces of a broken heart and get on with life.

But such is life that there are songs for every occasion, and if you think you can't possibly go on without him/her then it's time to dust off your cd collection and stick on some feel-good tunes.

So whilst summer loving comes to an abrupt end, FemaleFirst is here to help you find the best songs to crank up in order to dry the tears and show you that you need a man (or woman) just as much as a fish needs a bicycle.

I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor

This song is without a doubt one of the best break up songs to make you feel like an independent woman once again and will have you prancing about the house with a hairbrush belting out the lyrics at the top of your lungs!

First performed by Gloria Gaynor, but covered several other times, the single was released in October 1978 and was written by Freddie Perren and Dino Fekaris. The song is perfect for anyone trying to mend a broken heart (or just realise that they can live without their ex) as the lyrics describe a narrator who finds personal strength while recovering from a break-up.

Despite being almost 30 years old it is still going strong and is one of the most famous disco songs of all time as well as being Gaynor's biggest hit after it received massive airplay in 1979, reached number one on the UK chart and Billboard Hot 100.
