Female First caught up with the band to chat about barbeques, beer and their day jobs as they surge forward into the musical limelight.
To anyone who hasn’t heard of you yet, how would you describe the sound of your band?
Music; but better! A less sarcastic answer would be a cross between Linkin Park and Killswitch Engage but we have a genuine problem saying what we sound like, and we're sure most bands do have trouble with this question!
To be honest we would rather people made up there own mind. If nothing else we would like to think we sound like we're having a great time.
Who makes up the band, because despite being called Population Four, there‘s actually five of you right?
Yeah, I suppose it does sound strange! We are;
Richard Maclachlan - vocals
David Valentine - Guitars
Simon Smith - Drums
John Cookson - Guitars
Paul Ceres - Bass
How did you guys meet then?
All the members have known one another for a long time though different local bands and shows, that’s the short story.
The long one is....Daff and Cooko we're in a band together called Mirrored Emotion, when that band came to a close they got together with Si, who had been in Home Made Memory.
After a while the decided they needed a bassist and singer, Ceres had been in Home Made Memory with Si and wasn’t working on any new projects so they asked him to join. Rick was in a band called SOLD but as things were tailing off with that band so they asked him to join as a singer.
So whilst you’re still making it as rock stars what do you all do for a day job?
Ceres is a trainee engineer
Rick tries to sell kitchens over the phone, and he occasionally goes to university studying history
Daff Mans the tills at Lidl
Cooko is the king of the decorating department at B&Q
Si is a postman
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Barbeques and beer; hopefully at the same time.
Ideally, where would you like to be in 10 years?
Without sounding too cliché, we would like to be making a modestly successful living off music.
Who do you look up to in the music industry?
Rick - Lost Prophets
Cooko - Punchline
Ceres - Rise Against
Si- Protest The Hero
Daff - Bowling For Soup
In your opinion, who is the best artist around at the moment?
Van Gogh, maybe Picasso, its far to close to call!
If you could collaborate with/support on tour anyone, alive or dead, who would it be and why?
36 Crazyfists, we figure they would be fun to hang with!
So competition to ‘make it big’ is rife at the moment; What makes you different from all the other bands trying to make it at the moment?
We're not an Indie Band!
Where can people watch you?
