As 2008 comes to a close there aren't that many CD's that I have asked Santa for, mainly because I bought them all already. Sorry, but I just couldn't wait until December 25.
Funeral For A Friend
So in honour of some of the best albums I have seen this year, I have decided to give to you my top ten CD's of the year that you might not have heard of. So if they aren't already on your CD rack, make sure that come 2009, you add them to your collection.
FFAF were back with a bang in 2008 as they released ‘Memory And Humanity’ as the first album on their very own label ‘Join Us Records’. Well received by fans and critics alike, the band are currently on a full European tour bringing their electric live set to the masses.
You Me At Six have been one of the hardest working bands on the UK rock scene this year, playing on countless tours which culminated in an extensive headline tour complete with sold-out Astoria show and support slots with Fall Out Boy on their arena dates.
Debut album ‘Take Off Your Colours’ brought the band their first Kerrang! cover feature and the mag even branded them as “the only new British band you need to be bothered with this year”.
If ever there was a British band that could stand amongst the American heavyweights in metal, it’s Bullet For My Valentine. Their new album ‘Scream Aim Fire’ took them from being a well known band, to being a worldwide name and saw them travel across the globe playing in front of thousands of adoring fans from America to Japan. 2008 was certainly the year they became a major player in the metal scene.
Melodic rock goodness from the Valleys comes this way. Their self-titled debut album, released in November, was produced by Stuart Richardson of the Lostprophets and has already propelled the band onto the rock radar.
Shows with Lostprophets, Funeral For A Friend and The Blackout hasn’t hurt either. Next single, ‘You and Me’ in February looks set to further continue the impressive rise of Attack! Attack!
Once again Kerrang! has proved itself to be the catalyst for new bands coming through the ranks and spotting talent early on. Not only that, but to be championed by Kerrang! is as good as a step ladder to album sales. As such, the magazine’s annual compilation was always likely to be a massive hit with the likes of Slipknot, Bullet For My Valentine, Fall Out Boy and Green Day on the tracklisting!
Beardy quartet from Glasgow who created an almighty fuss in 2008 with their debut EP, ‘A Guidance From Colour’ and follow up single ‘What Is Light, Where Is Laughter?’, as well as shows alongside Biffy Clyro, The Subways, The Smashing Pumpkins and Finch.
The band who just wrapped up their first headlining tour of the UK, enter the studio in January to begin the recording of their debut album.
Avenged Sevenfold made their presence felt in the UK this year with a single release of ‘Dear God’ and the release of the rather luxurious CD and DVD package ‘Live In The LBC & Diamonds In The Rough’. The band also provided one of the most exciting sets at the Kerrang! Awards Week of Rock.
I Am Ghost’s rejuvenated line-up unleashed their second album upon the world in 2008 and piqued the interest of Rock fans across the country.
Story Of The Year made a welcome return to UK shores in 2008 with a headline tour, appearance on Taste Of Chaos and the release of third album ‘The Black Swan’. As energetic as ever, these guys know how to put on a show and didn’t fail to disappoint with another rousing release and vigorous live set.
