Kanye West has personally apologised to Taylor Swift for ruining her big moment at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards, after the teenager revealed on U.S. TV she had yet to hear directly from the rapper.

The Stronger hitmaker has been heavily criticised for storming the stage at the New York event to protest Swift's win for Best Female Video and insist it belonged to Beyonce.

During an appearance on talk show The View on Tuesday, Swift admitted she was still waiting to receive a personal apology from West and was crushed by his behaviour at the prizegiving.

She said, "My overall thought process went something like, wow, I can't believe I won... don't trip and fall. I'm gonna thank the fans, this is so cool... Oh, Kanye West is here, cool haircut... what are you doing there? Then ouch, and, I guess I'm not gonna get to thank the fans... Sure (I would meet with him). He has not personally reached out or anything, if he wanted to say, 'Hi'."

According to Usmagazine.com, West phoned Swift and personally apologised for his behaviour after the interview aired, and the country star graciously accepted.

Before the apology, Swift credited the overwhelming support she received from celebrity friends and fans in the aftermath of the shocking incident with helping her to regain her composure: "I'm not gonna say that I wasn't rattled by it but I had to perform five minutes later so I had to get myself back to a place where I could perform.

"There were a lot of people around backstage who were saying wonderful, incredible things to me and just had my back. All the stars who came to show their love in the hours afterwards, all these people tweeting (writing on Twitter.com), all the fans. I didn't know there were so many people defending me so I didn't have to."

West has expressed his apologies in public on three occasions and vowed to "take some time off" to improve his attitude after being quizzed about the incident by  U.S. talk show host Jay Leno on Monday night.
