My Heart Will Go On - Celine Dion
There are some songs that will never get old no matter how little they are played. Here at FemaleFirst we decided to take a look at the songs which have shaped out music industry today and can safely be dubbed as 'classics'
One of these songs has to be the theme song of the 1997 blockbuster film Titanic. My Heart Will Go On was recorded by Celine Dion and the success of the film coupled with Celines phenomenal voice made sure this song went down in history.
Originally released in 1997 on Dion's album Let's Talk About Love, it went to number 1 all over the world, including the United States, United Kingdom and Australia.
Proving why it's in out chart, in March 2007, the United World Chart ranked the songs as the fourteenth most successful song in music history and in that same list, "My Heart Will Go On" is also the second most successful song released by a solo female musician behind Whitney Houston's cover of "I Will Always Love You."
James Horner had originally composed the song as an instrumental motif and it can still be heard several times during the film, then he decided to use vocals on the track for the end credits of the film.
Director James Cameron did not want such a song, but Horner went ahead anyway and got Will Jennings to write the lyrics and unsurprisingly Celine Dion was his first choice to sing it, but when she heard the song, she did not want to record it.
However, thankfully, her manager and husband, René Angélil convinced her to record a demo version, which was something she hadn't done for many years but luckily she fell in love with the song and as they say; history was made.
Awards Cabinet
Being 1998's best-selling single worldwide, there's no surprise that the song has more awards that you can shake a stick at! Some of them include the 1997 Academy Award for Best Original Song as well as dominating the Grammy Awards of 1999, winning Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television. It also won the Golden Globe Award in 1998 and the Billboard Music Award for the Soundtrack Single of the Year, Blockbuster Entertainment Award for the Favourite Song from a Movie, Billboard Latin Award for the First English-language Song to Top Billboard's Hot Latin Tracks Chart, Japan Record Award for the Special Achievement and Japanese Gold Disc Award for the Song of the Year.
Proving a favourite with couples, the song appeared on The Hits' 50 Greatest Love Songs at number 3 in 2006 and it also reached number on in VH1's "50 Best Movies Songs." Also, in a 2006 poll for a Channel 5 program Britain's Favourite Break-up Songs, "My Heart Will Go On" was voted tenth.
As one of the most popular 'wedding songs' of all time, this is one song which will live in the hearts of hopeless romantics for years to come, and with a voice like Celine’s belting out the high notes; who could blame it?
