Research conducted to celebrate MasterCard's sponsorship of the BRIT Awards 2015 has found that the average Brit listens to three hours, 23 minutes of music each day - the equivalent of four and a half albums every day, or seven weeks each year.

The songs we listen to vary depending on the time of day, with Pharrell Williams' 'Happy' waking us up in the morning, The Beatles singing at us on our way to work and The Eagles' tunes to relax when at home.

26% of the 2,000 people surveyed said that they listen to music first thing in the morning to get them in a good mood, with 'Happy' getting most of them out of bed (20%), whilst Bill Withers' 'Lovely Day' came in second (19%) and U2's 'Beautiful Day' in third (19%).

Top ten songs to listen to once you've woken up are as follows:

  8. The Killers - 'Mr Brightside'
  9. Cat Stevens - 'Morning Has Broken'
  10. Katy Perry - 'Roar'

Meanwhile, on the way to work, The Beatles 'Hey Jude' (20%) was followed by a lot of love for Dolly Parton's '9 To 5' and AC/DC's 'Highway To Hell'.

One in five admitted that they think music makes the day go quicker (22%) whilst it was discovered that the most popular tune whilst at work was Taylor Swift's 'Shake It Off' (16%).

The best song to listen to whilst at the gym was Survivor classic 'Eye Of The Tiger' (27%) and those who listen to music to help relax (89%) voted their favourite calming tune as The Eagles' 'Hotel California' (26%).
