BADLY DRAWN BOY, aka Damon Gough returns with a very limited new single, ‘Born In The UK’ on August 14th 2006. The single, available on 7” only and limited to 500 copies, will be released on the Emidisc label – the legendary EMI offshoot made famous by the Dylan bootlegs in the sixties. ‘Born In The UK’, the first release from BDB since 2004’s ‘One Plus One Is One’ album, is 160 seconds of rollicking rock’n’roll which details the events that have shaped his life since his beginning in 1969. BDB-watchers will note the nod to Gough’s hero Bruce Springsteen. According to Gough he wanted to ‘capture something about being British or English. I didn’t want it to be just a list of events, it had to encompass things that captured a version of events in my life. The fact that the Silver Jubilee meant more to me than the Sex Pistols cause’ I was only seven years old, it’s not a diss on them. It’s just a fact of my ignorance. I want to stand up and say I’m proud to be English. And it seems that that right’s been taken away from me for some reason.” The sleeve, designed by Andy Votel - Gough’s longterm cohort and Twisted Nerve Records partner, is based on traditional British fish and chip newspaper wrapping, is available in three different colours and accessorised with it’s own chipfork. ‘Born In The UK’ was recorded at Rockfield Studio’s in Wales with producer Nick Franglen (one half of organo-dance maestros Lemon Jelly) and is the first offering from BDB’s forthcoming album also entitled ‘BORN IN THE UK’. It’s no secret that the album was, at times, a painful experience for Gough, but after an intense year the album is near completion and due for release on October 16th on EMI. Since winning the Mercury Prize for his 2000 debut THE HOUR OF BEWILDERBEAST, the Mancunian songwriter has had a prolific career with the subsequent releases of the soundtrack to the film ABOUT A BOY, 2002’s HAVE YOU FED THE FISH and his last album (and last for XL Recordings ) ONE PLUS ONE IS ONE.
