As Obehi prepare to release her brand new EP, Everything, we caught up with the little stunner for a quick chat.
Obehi, what are you up to?
Hiding from the rain and having a chat with you Female First! I had a half day at work today and this is one of the best ways I can think of to start my weekend.
So, you’re getting ready to release your debut EP can you tell us a bit about it?
My EP, Everything, comes out in every digital store I can think of on the 29th March. It’s made up of 3 tracks: Everything, For You and Don’t Come Home to Me. It’s all about love- the good and the bad. It’s an introduction to me as an artist.
The new single from that, comes out on 29th March, why are you releasing that track now?
Well there is no time like the present! I spent last year recording and growing as an artist and now I’m definitely ready to release my first record. It’s a big step and you have to be confident in yourself and in your work before you take.
There is a lot of competition in the business today; do you think you have what it takes to give the big names a run for their money?
Without a doubt! I’ve got so much drive and commitment working for me and I’ve also got an unconcentrated love for what I’m doing which is the most important thing.
So, if you could recommend just one song of yours for us to download so that we want to hear all of your music, what would it be?
“Don’t Come Home to Me”; it’s one of my favourites and a random fact you didn’t know- the first song of the EP that I recorded. Its fun, fierce and I guarantee will check you singing along.
If I was contemplating coming to your show or sitting at home and watching Big Brother, how would you get me out of the house?
I’d get you with the fact you can have both! Record BB; come out watch me perform the EP live; then watch BB afterwards when you get back home. Best of both worlds and you don’t have to miss out on anything. My Live shows give you a more dynamic experience of the EP. Not to be missed. If you’re lucky I might even also throw in your favourite desert into the deal.
We’ve got to admit you’re a little bit cool, so what advice would you give to someone just starting out, knowing what you know now?
Thank you! I’ve always wanted to get some coolness going on! Ok my advice would be - be true to yourself and be happy. Don’t try and look a certain way or sound a certain way. Don’t be the next anyone else; you can draw inspiration from others but be the first you. Also be smart and if it sounds too good to be true; no matter how much you want to believe that it’s true it probably isn’t. No one gets anywhere without a whole lotta hard work.
If O.B.E.H.I was an acronym what would each letter stand for?
O - Oceans I love the Ocean
B – Beaches because I love beaches.
E – Everything my EP
H –Heart; I’ve got big heart which I put into everything I do.
I – Islands like beaches are my paradise
Michael Jackson had the Moonwalk, Elvis had the snake hips, what do you have that makes you unique?
Oh I’ve got my moves ...haha...it’s called the Monica; I got my inspiration from Friends. It’s a must see...maybe you’ll see it in a club sometime or maybe at one of my shows.
Now, clearly we need to get to know each other more, so tell me an interesting fact about you that no one else knows?
Something that no one else knows might be quite hard because my sisters pretty much know everything about me. Ok I got one after I watched a scary movie called “Dead Silence” I had to sleep with the lights on for like a week. Not one of my superwoman moments but that movie so seriously creepy; I don’t recommend watching it alone like I did.
What song do you wish you’d written?
Right now I wish I wrote “Sleeping with a broken heart” by Alicia keys. It’s beautifully blunt and personal. It pulls you into the emotions of the song and when I sing it I feel like my heart is broken. I love it. Amazing song.
And if you were to take me on a trip to your hometown, what would be the first place we’d go?
Home to my Mum’s and you’d get to meet the best person in my world.
What’s the best prank you’ve ever pulled on someone?
Sometimes I’m just cruel, I have a friend who really hates scary movies and generally anything creepy so I decided to hide in a closet in a scream mask; wait for ages while he looked everywhere for me and then when he gave up; I Jumped out and scared the poor thing right out of his skin. It was so funny!
And what’s the most daring thing you’ve ever done? Please tell us how it ended up!
Well I was on a bus with my sister and when we got off and the bus drove away she realised that she left her gloves on the bus. I ran like a maniac in heels after this bus until it finally stopped at a set of traffic lights and let me on. I got the gloves and saved the day. They were her favourite gloves.
If you were to send someone to prison for crimes against music, who would it be?
I think the cheeky girls need to do some hard time for their crimes against music.
If you could only listen to one CD for the rest of your life, what would it be?
The Ultimate Luther Vandross. I am in love with his voice; it is so silky and smooth. I could listen to him forever.
What were you doing last night at 11?
Last night at 11 I was watching Cougar Town. I am obsessed with that show; it’s hilarious.
What are you going to do after this interview?
Have a girly day with good movies and some popcorn.
When was the last time you did something incredibly stupid?
Geez I don’t know; I have to be really sensible at work so my stupidity factor is at an all time low. I would go for going on the Oblivion in Alton Towers; I am scared of heights and that was such a terrifying ride. Never again but at least I can say I did it once.
What’s the last film you saw?
All about Steve, It’s so funny, I love Sandra Bullock.
What’s the last thing you bought?
A pair of lovely sparkly performance heels. They are so so pretty.
