What are you up to?
Right now, I am [laughs] walking around in my hotel room. I’m about to take some Theraflu actually. It’s horrible, yeah, I have a really bad cold that I’m trying to recover from, but it’s all good. I’m here in LA, I had to do Jimmy Kimmel last night, so I’m in town for that, in LA right now.
So, tell me a bit about what you’re here to promote?
Well, I will be promoting of course, my brand new album No Gravity, which comes out in the UK in November, and so that’s why pretty much I’m talking to you, of course. I’ll be in the UK very soon though, sometime in September I think, so I’ll be coming over there to do exactly the same thing I’m out here doing right now!
If we didn’t have any clue as to who you were, what three words sum you up?
Ah, three words that would sum me up? Joyful, artistic and musical. [laughs] I think that’s about it!
As Jacko had the Moonwalk and Elvis had the snake hips, what do you have that makes you unique?
Oh, if you’re talking about dance moves, I’ve got a little move...I had a song called Roll It, I don’t know you probably heard it; it was with me, J-Status and Rihanna, and there was a little dance that goes along with it – it’s pretty hot! You have to...it’s all in the hips and the belly. Maybe I’ll demonstrate it for you one day! Well, I guess what separates me really from other artists...I mean, I’m also a songwriter as well as a singer, and I think my music is just reflective of who I am. So you know, I’m just a girl from Barbados, but I love all music, so my music actually really sounds like that; it sounds like if you took an island girl and she’s making all kinds of music, literally.
Can you tell me an interesting fact about you that no-one else knows?
An interesting fact about me that no-one else knows. Hmm. A lot of people don’t know that I play drums! Yeah, pretty well too, I’m pretty good at it! [laughs] I’ve been playing for a long time, since I was a little girl. But yeah, that’s something a lot of people don’t...I guess I don’t tell people that very often.
What song do you wish you’d written?
Oh my gosh, I wish I had written A Song For You by Donny Hathaway. It is my favourite song in the whole world, and that song is timeless. That’s what I want to do; I wish I could have written a song that’s so timeless.
If I was contemplating coming to your show or sitting at home and TV, how would you convince me to come out?
Oh! [laughs] How would I convince you? I would be like “hey, if you’re having a bad day, if you’re feeling lame, or if you just want to have some fun, come out to my show - my music will make you feel better! That’s what it’s about, you know, my music...that’s the goal, whenever I make a song it doesn’t matter if you’re down, or if you’re already in a good mood...you know, if you’re in a good mood I’ve got a song that will take you higher than where you already are! So my music and my shows are all about feeling good, and just mass catharsis, everyone just having a great time together, and lyrics that inspire and lyrics that motivate and make you feel good, and make you happy.
