Following his support of Gabrielle on her UK tour and more recent support of Matt Cardle also across British venues, Azu is a singer-songwriter based in London who's gearing up for the release of his debut EP.

Born in West Africa, it wasn't until his early teens that Azu moved to the UK, hoping to reflect that he has absorbed both of cultures in his music, combining classic pop and soul with hints of his African origins.

Female First got the opportunity to put some questions to the aspiring singer, about just what it is that makes his musical juices flow, his new music and what he has set for the future.

For those who haven't yet heard your music, how best would you describe yourself as an artist?

I am a singer, songwriter and performer and my music combines pop/soul with hints of African music.

What is it about music that you love?

The ability to transport me to a different place. Melodies, lyrics, vocals, instruments all do this to me in one way or another. Music also helps communicate with oneself and others which is always good.

Who, where or what do you draw inspiration from?

I draw inspiration from my life experiences and those of others around me.

What kind of creative process do you go through when you start working on new material?

I generally write songs at 2 - 3 am in the morning on my guitar in my little attic. There is something about the stillness of the night that allows my ideas flow. My songs are usually from my life experiences and I can confront myself easier at this time of night.
After the song is written, I take it to the studio to work on the production with my producer Tony.

Your debut single is 'Hands', tell us about that song.

Hands is a very personal song to me and it deals with loss and hope.

'The Fall' is your debut EP and that'll get a digital release on June 2, what should we expect from that?

You can expect honest lyrics with uplifting melodies. There is something summery about this particular E.P. in my opinion. For all it's melancholy, it is summery and uplifting.

You recently toured with Gabrielle and Matt Cardle, how were those experiences?

Amazing. I absolutely love being on the road. Gabrielle was just amazing, she spoke to me after one of the shows and had the nicest things to say about my voice and songs. It was equally amazing to watch a UK soul veteran perform every night at such a high standard.
Matt is just a gent. Truly, he is like a friend now. He has the most amazing voice and his fans are the warmest crowd to perform to.
Watching him hit all those notes night after night was really something.

Where do you hope to be by this time next year?

Hopefully gearing up to release my album.

What's the big aim?

To connect with as many people as possible through my music and lyrics.

Are you currently involved in any other projects you'd like to share some details about?

Yes I am involved in other projects but not allowed to say just yet.

Azu's debut EP is to be digitally released on June 2.
