Lisa Stansfield

Lisa Stansfield

Two and a half decades after topping the charts globally with 'All Around The World', Lisa Stansfield is back with the hopes she can do it all over again.

We got the chance to put some questions to the star about the new album, the creative process she went through and other projects she's been working on.

This is your first album for ten years - what drew you back into the industry?

It really feels like the time is right for me now. I wasn't sure where, if anywhere I fitted in before.

It'll be your seventh studio album - how much has your music changed over time?

I feel with this album we have gone almost full circle. The way we recorded this album and what we wanted to achieve with it is similar to our first album. This is a classic soul album and we've truly gone back to our roots with it. I'm very proud of it.

How did you find the creative process when you went about making your new album 'Seven'?

We've been writing songs the whole time that I've been away, we had many to choose from in the end. It's been a very creative time for me and we wrote and recorded a lot of it in our studio in Rochdale and also in London, New York and LA.

What can fans expect from this new record?

An album from my heart, I feel I'm doing what I do best with these songs.

How difficult would you say it is for women in this business and line of work compared to men?

I've been fortunate to not really experience any problems due to my gender, we've faced more prejudice for being Northern!

You've co-written with Ian Devaney once more - what is it about his work that you love?

Ian and I have worked together from day one, it works for us, we compliment each other. The only album which I didn't work with Ian on is in all honesty my least favourite.

If you could collaborate with any artist today, who would you choose and why?

That's a hard question to answer. There are lots of artists I respect and admire. Whenever I've collaborated with anyone in the past it's just happened really, I've never actively sought it out.

What can we expect from you in coming months, aside from the new music?

Well obviously I'll be working hard promoting the album- radio, TV, press etc.
Also a film I'm in called Northern Soul is being released this year. It's like a Northern Saturday night Fever! Fantastic cast - including Steve Coogan and Ricky Tomlinson. In it I play the lead characters naggy mum, I loved being her!

Lisa's new album 'Seven' is released February 10.
