Owls Of The Swamp

We decided to switch things up a bit during our latest interview with Pete Uhlenbruch - the man behind the music in Aussie indie-folk outfit Owls Of The Swamp.

Reviving the '15 Questions We Ask Everyone', we talk everything from hidden talents to superpowers. Check out what Pete had to say below.

Hello there, what are you up to?

Right now I’m fiddling round with a head-torch, trying to get it to work. I’m heading off soon to a jungle retreat in Peru for a few weeks, and I hear it helps to see in the dark.

So, tell me a bit about what you’re here to promote?

I’ve just released my latest ‘Owls of the Swamp album titled ‘ATLAS’. It’s my latest adventure in ambient indie folk.

And if we didn’t have any clue as to who you were, what three words sum you up?

Friendly, caffeinated, mystic.

And as Jacko had the Moonwalk and Elvis had the snake hips, what do you have that makes you unique?

I spent quite a few years wearing my dad’s old hat from the 1950s and it somehow became a bit of a trademark. Though I’m enjoying a shorter-hair hat-free period these days.

Now, clearly we need to get to know each other more, so tell me an interesting fact about you that noone else knows?

I can say any word backwards, pretty much instantly.

What song do you wish you’d written?

Michelangelo by Emmylou Harris.

If I was contemplating coming to your show or sitting at home and TV, how would you convince me to come out?

I would tell you that every time you leave your comfort zone, you invite magic into your life.

And if you were to take me on a trip to your hometown, what would be the first place we’d go?

I would take you to the Penny Farthing café in Northcote. It’s pretty much the best coffee in Melbourne (where I spent most my years), and in my life nothing usually happens until coffee does.

Who was the last person you called / text and what for?

My singing teacher, to confirm the time of our most recent lesson.

If you were a superhero, what would be your superpower?

I think the ability to freely move between dimensions without disintegrating would be pretty cool.

If you had to date a member of the same sex who would it be?

Elon Musk. I’d try and persuade him to test one of his commercial space-flight vehicle prototypes for dinner in the cosmos.

What was the last thing you bought?

A new guitar strap.

Have you ever been arrested?

Nope. Knock on wood, hopefully a piece that’s not stolen.

Speaking of prison - if you were to send someone to prison for crimes against music, who would it be?

The Fun Loving Criminals – get it?

What were you doing last night at 11?

Watching the season one finale for Jericho. I love to indulge in post-apocalyptic TV series when I get time home.

'Atlas' is out now.
